The Truth About Competition

I love this time of year - the weather and fall football and finishing baseball!  If you don't like sports, you could be miserable if your spouse does!  I'm glad I like sports - even though Jim is a much bigger fan.

Unfortunately,  I think that competition can cause problems though.  I'm a victim.  Well, not really a victim.  But in the past I have allowed competition to get out of hand, so that I was overcome by my ugly nature.  Yes, I do have an ugly nature - because I'm human.  Thankfully, over the years the Lord has been teaching this slow learner that the only way to avoid this is to keep my focus on glorifying Him so that I can exercise self-control.

The basis of competition is doing your best to win a game. But sometimes it becomes more than a game.  Games are just that - games.  They are meant to entertain.  They are not meant to change life.  They are not life and death.  But sometimes people forget that.  They get so caught up in the game, that it seems like life and death.

Another problem is that for some participants, they want to win so badly that the game is no longer fun.  If the game is not fun, why play?  Motives of the heart are important.  Desires to exalt oneself are never blessed by the Lord.  "For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly..." Romans 12:3

But probably the biggest problem is that for some people - whether participants or observers - the importance of the game is to exalt themselves or their team over other participants or teams.  It's more than just doing their best.  It's putting someone else down.  Their feelings toward their opponents are so negative as to be destructive.  And for Christians, this would be a huge problem - and not acceptable.  "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.  Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others."  Philippians 2:3-4

Probably the best example I've seen of good competition was a couple of years ago when the Maryville, Missouri High School football team had a sizable lead over an opponent.  The other team had a special needs player who had not played and at the end of the game, when they put in him for a play, the Maryville players held back in their pursuit while he ran for a touchdown.  Now that is class, in the best sense of the word.  And it put a smile on God's face, as well as most people who saw it.

So I hope and pray that I can always exercise such class in competition - and have a great time while doing it!

The Truth About Politics

I emailed some of these thoughts about an email I forwarded, but thought I would blog them as well, because I think it's time that some Christian truth needs to be spoken about the world of politics.

There is a lot wrong with our country right now and I think the only way you could think we're not in trouble is if you don't read the newpaper.  BUT...

Truth #1:  We're still the greatest nation in the world.  That's why people flock here and the gripers and complainers won't go anywhere else!

Truth #2:  Born again believers in Jesus Christ are to stand up for what's right, but we are held to a different standard.  We are to love - not an emotion, but a choice to want the best for the other person - and pray for our "enemies" - that God would open their hearts & minds to the truth and the Truth.  "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." Matthew 5:44-45  There is absolutely NO Biblical justification for burning the holy books of another religion.  It accomplishes nothing, ruins their testimony and closes the minds of nonbelievers to listening to anything relating to the Lord. This is a man's idea, not God's.

Truth #3: Believers need to remember that Almighty God is totally sovereign over the entire universe and that includes all nations, including ours.  Nothing escapes his notice and He knows everything about everything.  He's not surprised by anything that happens.  Nothing takes Him by surprise.  "Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?  The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 'Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.'  He Who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.  Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure"  Psalm 2:1-5

Truth #4: God will not be mocked!  Don't think for one minute that anyone gets away with anything - ever.  No matter what our eyes may see,  God sees and judgment IS coming for all those who have mocked God by their sinful behavior, unbelief, and worship of idols. Their only hope is repentance & trusting Jesus Christ.  "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.  For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life."  Galatians 6:7-8

I personally believe that what our nation is going through is part of God's judgment on us for turning out backs on Him and ignoring His commands and worshipping everything and everyone else except God.  Unless we turn back to Him, just as Israel did time after time in the Old Testament, God will continue to remove His hand of blessing and let us reap what we and our leaders have sown.  BUT, never fear, fellow believers, look up, for your Redemption draws nigh - Keep believing, keep trusting, and keep your eyes on Jesus!  Read 1 Thessalonians 4:15 - 5:11 and rejoice!

The Truth About "Adult Businesses"

While coming home from dropping off my grandsons in Columbia, MO, on Thursday, I was again reminded of how much I despise "adult businesses".  It offends me to even see their signs.  And the signs are all along I-70 between St. Louis and KC.

It reminds me of how the lust (definition: "I want it and I want it now") of the flesh (whether it's sex, greed, popularity, power, fun, or a host of other things) ALWAYS enslaves the people involved.  The promise of anything positive is an absolute total LIE from the pit of hell itself.  There is absolutely NO satisfaction or contentment that lasts.  Only deception and pain.

SO, it has been my practice for some time - everytime I pass a sign - to pray that that establishment will go broke and for salvation for all those involved in it.  If there are no young ones in the car with us, I pray out loud - otherwise, I pray a silent prayer in the name and power and blood of Jesus.  Join me if you like.  "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."  James 5:16

The Truth About The Spirit

One of my favorite books is My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers.  Thought this quote from his book was worth posting:

"The voice of the Spirit of God is as gentle as a summer breeze---so gentle that unless you are living in complete fellowhip and oneness with God, you will never hear it.  The sense of warning and restraint that the Spirit gives comes to us in the most amazingly gentle ways.  And if you are not sensitive enough to detect His voice, you will quench it, and your spiritual life will be impaired.  This sense of restraint will always come as a 'still small voice' (1 Kings 19:12), so faint that no one except a saint of God will notice it....Whenever the Spirit gives you that sense of restraint, call a halt and make things right, or else you will go on quenching and grieving Him without even knowing it.

Suppose God brings you to a crisis and you almost endure it, but not completely.  He will engineer the crisis again, but this time some of the intensity will be lost.  You will have less discernment and more humiliation at having disobeyed...But if you will go on through the crisis, your life will become a hymn of praise to God."

I guess the question has to be:  Can I hear His voice?

The Truth About Meanness

Ok, it's after midnight and I couldn't sleep, so I decided to finish a couple of blog drafts and write this one.

It is so distressing when a loved one is hurt.  It takes a lot to bother me about me, but not when it's my loved one.  My natural instinct is to lash out.  Sometimes I do that and I'm always sorry for not having taken the high road - I'll rephrase that - for not having done it the Lord's way.  I'm a strong protector because of my dysfunctional background, so it has taken a long time to curb that natural instinct.  Don't get me wrong.  I still protect.  But God has shown me that He is a better Protector.  I'm so grateful for that.

A verse that has helped me this time is Romans 12:21:  "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."  So I trust the Lord to protect my loved one and make things right.  Way to go, God!

The Truth About Focus

Have you ever noticed that WHAT we focus on determines HOW we think?  In other words, our thoughts usually determine our attitudes. 

For instance, if we think about not liking certain weather, we will probably be in a lousy mood when it occurs. I've met so many people who say they just HATE rainy days or snow or cold weather or hot weather.  I wonder what would happen if we were just thankful for the variety of weather God has given us.  We would probably go nuts if every day was sunny or cloudy or cold or hot.  (Probably why not many people choose to live in the Artic or Anartica).

If we think something doesn't interest us, we will feel bored when that occurs.  Children often say they are bored.  But when any person says that, aren't they really saying, "I'm not having my selfish desires met."? 

Maybe if we focused on the wonderful gifts God has given us:  the breath of life, THIS day, people we care about, a roof over our head, food, clothes - what we have right now - we would be grateful to our Creator and would want to do something for HIM, instead of for ourselves.  Then I suspect we wouldn't be bored or in a bad mood at all.

The Truth About National Disasters

The purpose of my blog is to share truth with others and sometimes the consequences of not acknowledging the truth.  Sometimes that doesn't agree with some people.  But that doesn't change the truth of something.

Remember that comedian that used the phrase, "Wake up, America!"?  Well, wake up, America!  We need to wake up to the fact that God's hand of blessing is being removed from our nation.  Or maybe it is already gone.  Weather catastrophes seem to be increasing at an alarming rate and other catastrophes are multiplying as well.  Murders, financial disasters, and other troubles confirm that our nation is in trouble. 

Many people are unable to look past the physical to the spiritual.  That's too bad.  We can't see the wind, but we know it exists because we see the results of its power, even if only a gentle breeze.  We may not be able to see the spiritual realm, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. 

God is God and we are not.  He will not let His name be defamed or ignored.  Unfortunately, that's what many of our leaders and citizens are trying to do.  They may say they believe in God, but their actions deny that.  If we, as a nation, choose to ignore Him and remove His influence from our lives, He will allow it.  And then we will suffer the consequences of that action.

The most important thing we can do for our nation is PRAY!  We must before it's too late.  Join me.

The Truth About Our Nation's Real Need

"It is fit and becoming in all people, at all times, to acknowledge and revere the Supreme Government of God; to bow in humble submission to His chastisement; to confess and deplore their sins and transgressions in the full conviction that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and to pray, with all fervency and contrition, for the pardon of their past offenses, and for a blessing upon their present and prospective action.

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no nation has ever grown. But, we have forgotten God. The Truth About The Supernatural

Is it just me, or are there an inordinate amount of movies and television shows about mediums, ghosts, etc.? It's been many months since I've been to Blockbuster, but the last time I was there the whole store was just FULL of demonic, supernatural, and occult evil.

I remember (barely!) when I was young that I just loved to watch spooky movies, shows, etc. I think a lot of young people find a fascination with the supernatural.

But BEWARE! It's dangerous. There is a huge price to pay for that. I know. I paid it. Even though I just watched a few movies, I would give anything if I had it to do over. Our minds are like computers and once we've downloaded images, they are there to stay. Oh sure, we might try to delete them, but they just go to a different location in our mind. And even though they might dim over the years, they are still there.

Another price we pay is that if we continue to download garbage, not only will garbage start to come out of us, but we will start to become desensitized to the garbage when we see it and not even recognize it for what it is (like the frog put in the pot of cold water starting to boil).

God feels VERY strongly about fascination with the supernatural. He expects us to stay away from it. Here's what He said to His chosen nation, Israel: "A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads." Leviticus 20:27

Now I'm not advocating murder, but God's views are the same today as they were then. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8. Even though this is referring to a person who practices the supernatural, would the Lord ignore a person who just dabbles in it? I think not. God's enemy, the devil, is behind the supernatural and occult. We can choose to be interested in his interests or in God's interests.

I'm soooo grateful that the Lord has forgiven me for my stupid choices when I was younger and that He has given me tactics for having a mind that pleases Him. (see "The Truth About Listening").

The Truth About Listening

We all listen to something. Well, duh, you say. What I mean is, our minds listen to something all the time. We're either listening to an outside stimulus (radio - oops, I mean, ipod, television, conversation, etc.) or we're listening to that little voice on the inside. And what we listen to can have a profound effect on who we are, what we do, and what we become.

I wish I could say I'm always listening to the right thing. I'm not. But I'm soooo grateful for God's still, small voice that will interrupt my wrong thoughts and give me a chance to change what I'm listening to and also ask His forgiveness for not filtering what comes to my mind. I like to say that I need to Philippians 4:8 everything. "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy --- think about such things."

There are also severe consequences for not filtering what we listen to. I love it when God speaks so clearly that there's no way we can misinterpret what He's saying. "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him. For the Lord is your life..."

The Truth About Mistakes

Listening to the news, I heard about a politician who dropped out as a candidate for an office because of his conviction in 2005 for holding a knife to the neck of a prostitute. He also had been abusive to his wife. Part of his statement said that he had made "mistakes"in his life.

mistake - 1. a fault in understanding, perception, interpretation, etc. 2. an idea, answer, act, etc. that is wrong; error

Call me crazy, but I just don't see how either of those actions fits that definition. Somehow our society has decided that it's ok to call an illegal, immoral or unethical act a "mistake". Then it's not as bad - or the person isn't as bad.

Don't get me wrong. We all make mistakes, even stupid mistakes. But what happened to speaking the truth about what we've done? (Remember my aversion to the word "sin" in my story?) Sure it's really difficult, even humiliating at times. But it's also very liberating, because after putting yourself "down" with a declaration of truth, the only direction you can go is up.

God has some truth to say about this: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:8-9

The Truth About Miracles

Most people would probably say that they would like to experience a miracle. How 'bout you? Maybe winning the lottery? Not bad. I think it would have been cool to witness the parting of the Red Sea or Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Imagine: walking through a dry sea floor with two huge walls of water on each side - or standing by a cave as a stinky, dirty man stumbles out at the command of Jesus!! Wow!!

But I still believe that the greatest miracle is the miracle God does in the human heart. I suppose the reason I feel that way is that I have personally experienced it. It's kinda like the wind - you can't see it with the human eye, but you can "see" the results of it!

My original miracle was when the "Light" went on and I understood God's Truth for the first time (check out "My Truth"). But that wasn't the only miracle God performed in my life.

As soon as I became a Christian ("My Truth"), I knew what my alcoholic, abusive stepfather needed. He needed the same thing that I needed all those years. He needed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I began to pray very hard for him. If anyone had asked me how things were going with me and my stepfather, I would have said, "Great! I'm really praying hard for him." But God knew better. He knew that way down deep inside of me there was hidden bitterness over the past.

Sometimes we're aware of bitterness. We know when we have ill feelings toward someone. If we realize that, we have to, by an act of our will, just say, "I'm not going to have that bitterness in my life, because it only hurts me." It doesn't mean our feelings will change right then, but we go ahead and do it by an act of our will. The feelings can take time.

But I was not aware of the bitterness toward my stepfather. I can only tell you what God did for me. One day my stepfather called me and had been drinking and was ranting and raving. Normally, I would have just hung up on him, because I had a wonderful husband and two beautiful children, I didn't live in the same state and I sure didn't have to put up with that. But this day was different. This day I didn't hang up. As I stood there listening to him, God just washed away all the bitterness, washed it right out, and tears began to stream down my cheeks and for the first time in my life, I saw my stepfather as God saw him. And I had nothing but love and compassion and pity for him. It truly was a miracle!

I certainly wasn't worthy of a miracle. The only reason I know of that God would have done that for me is that He loves me that much and He knows me that well. And He knows you that much and loves you that well too. It was a short time later that my stepfather died. Had he died and I'd had that bitterness within me, I would always have been hindered in my Christian walk. That's always what bitterness does to a person. I've heard that it's like taking poison to kill another person.

Miracles? I think the ones that can't be seen with the naked eye are the most impressive!

My Truth (lengthy because I'm no spring chicken!)

I was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma, well, a few years back. I didn't live there very long because my parents were divorced when I was a preschooler (this was back when people considered kindergarten preschool!!).



When I was in the fifth grade my mother remarried and like most women back then, she took her husband's last name, but I kept my last name. Consequently, my last name was different from my parents' last name. Now, that's a very common thing. But back then it was not as common. So if the kids in school found out about it, they would want to know why and I would be so embarrassed at having to explain that my mother was divorced and remarried. That was just personal and private info that I didn't want to have to share with my friends.



But in spite of the insecurities of a broken home, I had the knowledge of my mother's love. I knew that no matter what happened, my mother would always be there for me, always take care of me and always protect me. Years later, this would help me to understand a little bit about my heavenly Father's love. But back then, the picture I had of God was: He was that white-bearded Gentleman up in the clouds on His golden throne with all those little cherubs and angels flitting about at His beck and call.



I don't ever remember not believing in God or trying to be a good person. In fact, I was real good with the "God-help prayers". You know what those are: you're in trouble or you need something and you go "God, help, help!" Then you get out of that trouble or get what you need and you just forget about Him until the next time you need something. I even went through a membership training class for a church and I memorized all the books of the Old and New Testaments, John 3:16 and the 23rd Psalm!! All things considered, I really would have evaluated myself as a fairly decent person --- in fact, maybe just a little bit better than fairly decent, all things considered. But I know now that God saw me for just exactly what I was: a totally self-centered individual. And I know now that He was just watching over me, guiding me, protecting me, and just waiting for His perfect timing.



It took less than a year for me to realize, even though I was only in the sixth grade at the time, that my stepfather had a drinking problem. When I got older I would know that this was called alcoholism. He kinda had a Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde personality. There were times when he could be very kind, very generous and very loving toward my mom and me. And I know now that he really did love us - in his own way. But then there would be times when he was drinking that his personality would do a 180 degree turn and he would become very belligerant. And it was just kind of scary, because you never knew when one of those times was going to happen. It was a very difficult time of my life and a very painful time.



Because of that background, it probably won't surprise you to know that when I graduated from high school, I was very eager and excited to leave home and go off to college - even though that meant leaving my mother behind and worrying about her- since I was an only child.



But off I went to Oklahoma State University where I went for a year and a half - until I met Mr. Wonderful. Now Mr. Wonderful was not my "first love", but he was EVERYTHING I had ever dreamed of in a man. He was good-looking, had a great personality, was athletic, had a great sense of humor --- in fact, he's still all of those things. And what was even more amazing was not only did I fall in love with Mr. Wonderful, but Mr. Wonderful fell in love with me! And I know now that God was just watching out for me, leading me to the perfect person He had picked out just for me.



We were soon married and because of the difficult circumstances of my childhood and teenage years, I desperately wanted more than anything else to be the perfect wife and have the perfect home. Now I hid all of those feelings with a nonchalant and indifferent outward attitude because after all, if this didn't work out, I'd want to hide all of that hurt and pain I knew I would feel on the inside. And Jim, my husband, also came from a broken home. I knew that in situations like ours, the odds for a successful marriage were not in our favor. But I was going to try. I loved him so much I just knew I could be a good wife. Well, this trying went on for years.

When our first child came along - a beautiful baby girl we named Charissa, I decided to broaden my goals. Now not only did I want to be the perfect wife, I wanted to be the perfect mother. I just loved this little bundle of joy so much, I just knew I could be a good mother. And I tried and I tried and I tried. But it just seemed like the harder I tried, the more I failed and the more frustrated and miserable I became.

Now Jim and I really did have a pretty good marriage. That would not just have been from outsiders' point of view, but we probably would have said the same thing. But the failure and frustration and turmoil that I was experiencing as a wife and mother were coming from somewhere else. They were coming from the inside. And I know now that that's because the wrong person was in control of my life.

Well, we moved several times and we wound up in this town in Missouri and we decided that it was the appropriate thing to do to go to church. We had this small toddler now and she should be in some sort of Sunday school program or something. So we began to visit some churches and we visited this one church and from the first time I went I just knew that there was something different about these people. At first I couldn't put my finger on what it was, but the more I was around them, the more I realized that they just had a love and joy and peace within them that I knew I didn't have in my life - and that I desperately wanted.

I got involved in church activities, Bible studies and other Christian events and as I attended these, I began to hear and read things in the Bible that were all new to me - things I had not known before.

One of the things I learned was a new revelation on something that was very familiar to me. It was that verse I memorized many years before and knew by heart, but didn't understand in my heart. It was John 3:16. But someone explained it to me in a different way, saying that even though that verse did apply to everyone in the whole wide world, it was also a personal verse, just for me. So if you read it like that it would go something like this (and you could put your name in here where mine is): "For God so loved Melanie, that He gave His only begotten Son, that if Melanie believes in Him, she won't perish, but she'll have eternal life."

Well, I have to say it was a little bit hard to relate to the love of a heavenly Father, because of my unstable and inconsistent relationship with my earthly stepfather. But you know what? God knows what we need. He knows what we need even before we know what we need. He had given me a wonderful mother with a self-sacrificing kind of love that helped me understand a little bit about what my heavenly Father's love would be like. Because I knew how much my mother loved me and she was just a person. So God's love for me would be even more perfect!



I also learned that God has a wonderful plan for my life. Included in that plan is not just eternal life, so that I can live with Him forever and ever, but also an abundant life right now, at the present time. Jesus is the One Who tells us that: "I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)



Well, I was getting really excited about all these things I was learning about. But the next thing I learned about I wasn't excited about at all. In fact, I didn't even like it. That was that man, all mankind is sinful and so we're separated from God and so we can't know and experience His wonderful plan for our lives. And I was included in that group!

Well, first off, I did not like that word "sin" at all. It kinda gave me the heebie-jeebies to hear it or say it. But if there were sinners, I sure knew who they were! They were those people you read about in the newspaper: murderers, robbers, those kinds of criminals. They were definitely sinners! But me? I mean, after all, I had always tried to be a good person and I had always tried to do the right thing and I was always good 'n nice to anyone who was good 'n nice to me. But somebody showed me exactly what God thought of all those good works. In the Bible God tells us that all our good works are just like filthy rags to Him (Isaiah 64:6).

You see, for me, those outward crimes weren't sin for me, because I hadn't murdered anybody - well, not physically, but I might have with my words. I hadn't robbed any banks lately. Well, I hadn't robbed any banks at all. But my problem was somewhere else. It was on the inside and it had to do with my attitudes. For instance, my own stubborn self-will: I want what I want when I want it! Or my attitude of active rebellion against anyone or anything that got in my way: You were my friend as long as you did what I wanted you to do, or said what I wanted you to say. But don't ever not do those things or say those things, because then you wouldn't be my friend anymore. Or my attitude of just passive indifference: If you did not relate to me, myself and I, I just really wasn't too interested in you. Those were the attitudes within me that were keeping me separated from a holy, perfect God, Who cannot look upon any sin at all. And any attempt that I might make to reach this holy, perfect God by doing good works is going to fail. Either by a little or a lot, the results are always the same when we try to reach God by our good works: we fail!

Thank goodness what I learned didn't stop there. Because the next thing I learned was really good news! Exciting news! I learned that God had provided a Way - the only Way - that we could live with Him forever and ever, that we could know and experience His wonderful plan for our lives, and that we could have a personal relationship with the One who created us. Jesus, again, is the One Who tells us what that way is: "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:7)

Jesus came to this earth as a baby and grew up and lived a holy, perfect, sinless life. Then He suffered at the hands of man, shed His precious blood and died on the cross. When He died on that cross, He took all the punishment on Himself that I'm supposed to pay for my sins and that you're supposed to pay for your sins. Then He was buried and three days later He rose from the dead, showing that God, the righteous Judge, accepted His sacrifice as the perfect Lamb of God for mankind's sins.

Example: if I go 90 miles an hour down the road, you know what's going to happen, don't you? IF I live long enough, which is doubtful at 90 miles an hour, but if I do, those lights are going to go on behind me and a patrolman is going to pull me over and at the very least will give me a huge ticket because I've broken the laws of the land and I have to pay the penalty for that. And it's the same way with God's laws. We've all broken them in one way or another and we have to pay the penalty for that: death (Romans 6:23). But the good news is that Jesus has already paid it all so that we don't have to! And that's a free gift from God! (Romans 6:23)

I was so excited about all these things I was learning about, but just being excited about it wasn't enough. I had to receive the wonderful gift God had already given me of trusting Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and Lord and surrendering my life to Him.

Example: my husband comes home with a beautifully wrapped package for me. Now let's say I've given him a real obvious hint on what I want (which is the only kind of hint he gets!) and I know just exactly what's in that package. Let's say it's a small cube-size package (love those!). Well, he's already given me the gift, I know exactly what it is, and I am so excited about it. But if I don't reach out and take it from him by faith, knowing that it's from someone who loves me, that gift doesn't belong to me. And it's the same way with God's wonderful Gift. He's already given it to us, we may know all about it, we could even teach about it. But until we reach out by faith and receive it for ourselves, knowing that it's from the One Who loves us more than anyone else in the world loves us, that Gift doesn't belong to us. We have to receive it by faith.

That's what I did. On November 7, 1972, I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior and I turned over everything of my life that I knew to Him. Now I have to say, that wasn't very much. I didn't understand everything about what I was doing. But guess what? God didn't care. He didn't care what I knew. He didn't care what I didn't know. He didn't care what I had done. He didn't care what I hadn't done. He took me just the way I was.

This was three months after our second beautiful child was born - a beautiful baby boy that we named Brian. About seven days later it was so gracious of God to lead my husband to turn over the controls of his life to the Lord and we began our Christian home together and I became the perfect wife and mother. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? (If you believe that, I've got some oceanfront property in Kansas I want to sell you!!!) Of course I didn't become the perfect wife and mother. I'm still not the perfect wife and mother. But if you knew me then and you knew me now, you'd say: "Wow! What a miracle God is doing in her life!" Notice I said IS doing. God is not through with me yet. In fact, He has a long ways to go with me yet.

But God is so patient and kind and loving. And He has taught me so many wonderful things. And it all has to do with truth. MORE LATER.

Why Truth?

Back in the days of primal television, there was a game show called "Truth or Consequences". (OK, so you know I'm no "spring chicken"! In fact, the eggs have hatched and the chicks have not only left the nest, they've hatched their own eggs!) Anyhow, I did enjoy that show and enjoyed trying to figure out who of the three contestants was really telling the truth about themselves. Trust me, there were some really good liars out there!!

But now that I'm more mature, shall we say, I find that trying to figure out who's telling the truth is not only not enjoyable, it can be downright stressful and distressful. How can we really know? Who can we really trust? There are still some really good liars out there!!

Well, 37 years ago, I discovered that I could know the Truth and that Truth set me free. I was set free from fear and worry and hatred and bitterness and anxiety and self-absorption and self-centeredness and insecurity and frustration and turmoil and unrest and ignorance. Of course this didn't happen all at once. In fact, I'm still a flawed human being and I'm still in the process of being set free. In fact, I can still have a tiny bit of the above rear its ugly head occasionally. But I know what to do about it now.

So because I know there are probably millions of people like myself - both then and now - I want to share the truth as I've learned it and the consequences that I've seen and/or experienced from a lack of truth. Let the truth adventure begin!
